Announcing the 19th Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia Conference
Saturday October 5th, 2024
WA Maritime Museum,
Victoria Quay Road, Walyalup/Fremantle

The JMGA Conference Committee are pleased to announce the details of the upcoming biennial Conference. Taking place at the WA Maritime Museum, just outside of Boorloo/Perth, in Walyalup/Fremantle, this famed biennial event returns to the Western Australian coast for the first time since 2010.

This year’s stellar speaker line-up includes international guests Everett Hoffman (USA) – recent finalist for the AJF Young jewellers award, Thai jeweller Rudee Tancharoen speaking about traditional casting techniques and Julia Heineccius, educator and maker from the USA.

The conference highlights important First Nations artists, curators, and researchers from across Australia. Local Indigenous curator Michelle Broun, who has recently completed a survey of Indigenous Jewellery and Body Adornment, will lead a panel speaking with Indigenous makers. We’ll also hear a paper from the partnership Dr Aly De Groot and Dr Louise Hamby, discussing the introduction of contemporary methods to the traditional practices of the Indigenous makers of eastern Arnhem land, Gapuwiyak.

Surrounding the conference day are dynamic workshops, two of which will be led by another special guest, Kaori Juzu (Japan/Denmark), a 2023 Loewe Foundation Craft prize finalist. She will be joined by Everett Hoffman and Julia Heineccius in teaching workshops around the city. Kaori will also feature at an In Conversation gallery event the day after the conference at PS Art Space in Walyalup/Fremantle with Melissa Cameron.

Following our main Conference Day, the 6th of October will be given over to a stack of exhibition events, including gallery tours and artist talks, touching down at various venues throughout Walyalup/Fremantle and Boorloo/Perth. It will finish with a big group event (a Perth tradition) a sundowner in Walyalup. This is one not to be missed!

Our extensive exhibition line-up (ten shows confirmed and counting!) is a rare opportunity for artists to showcase their rich contribution to contemporary jewellery in WA, and it coincides with the second Indian Ocean Crafts Triennial. This adds even more exhibitions and events to see in WA from August – October 2024!
